The Outside of the Building Has Two Jobs
A facade has to keep water out of the wall for decades, and it is also the thing everyone sees. Those two requirements pull in different directions when the detailing gets rushed.
On an extension there is a third problem: how the new part meets the old. Trying to match forty year old brick or weatherboard rarely works, and the join usually looks like what it is.
And the place a clad wall leaks is almost never the middle of a sheet. It is the corners, the window openings and the junction with the roof.

Yes, and it is a common choice. Cladding the new part while leaving the original brick or weatherboard reads as a deliberate decision rather than a failed attempt to match.
Both weather rather than staying as installed. Copper darkens and eventually develops a green patina, and zinc dulls to a soft grey. That change is usually why the material was specified, but it is worth understanding first.
Often, and it usually makes sense. The junction between roof and clad wall is exactly where water gets in, so having one company detail both sides of it removes the handover where problems start.
Compared with rendered or painted finishes, yes. Colorbond in particular holds its finish for a long time with little more than an occasional wash.
